The Champagne That Beat Dom Perignon And Roederer Cristal For Only $66.67 A Bottle!!!

ko
Here's a rare and limited opportunity for you to acquire one of the world's finest Champagnes, Laurent-Perrier "Grand Siecle" Brut NV, for an unheard of price. Now through June 4, 2007 (unless sold out sooner) we will be selling this prestige cuvée at 3 bottles for only $200.00! That works out to only $66.67 a bottle! According to our research, this is the lowest price in the United States and more than 20% below the typical Chicagoland price of $90.00.

In his International Wine Cellar newsletter, Stephen Tanzer rated this exquisite wine an outstanding 94-points and ranked it ahead of such luminaries as Dom Perignon, Roederer Cristal and Krug Grand Cuvée among others. He described the Grande Siecle as follows: "Medium straw color, with a vigorous mousse. Wonderfully expressive aromas of white flowers, peach, fresh pear, sweet butter and exotic magnolia blossom. Concentrated and deep, with fresh ripe apple, red currant and fruitcake flavors accented by a strong chalky note. This manages to be dense and lively at the same time, with a remarkable range of flavors. Powerful and almost painfully concentrated on the very long finish. This cuvée, which is in a new, black bottle with a small black label, is based on 1996 juice, with the addition of wines from 1995 and 1993, and may be the finest Grand Siecle cuvee I've yet encountered."

Remember, this offer expires June 4, 2007 unless sold out sooner. Order yours today. A limited number of handsome gift boxes are available. We reserve the right to limit quantities.
Chardignon Cote De Brouilly
Say-Vino price $13.97

Chardignon Cote De Brouilly From one of the nicer villages of Beaujolais, this is an outstanding example of a great vintage in Beaujolais, with bursts of nice flavor, a wonderful light body, and a delicate elegance and surprising length! Purple in color with shades of ruby and with a bouquet reminiscent of irises and fresh grapes. The taste is peppery and rich with soft raspberry fruit as well as excellent balance and finesse. Chillable and highly recommended!!!
Seven Deadly Zins 2005
Say-Vino price $15.97

7deadlyzinsSeven of Lodi's best gave of their souls and the first fruits of each of their old vines to contribute to the layered complexity of this fanciful blend. Soft subtle peppercorn, licorice, and clove notes merge into a sinful marriage of deep brambly blackberries and lustful cherries. The finish is clean on the palate with hints of rich vanilla, cocoa, and mild tannins.
Pinky Vodka from Sweden
Say-Vino price $29.97pinky vodka
The world's most beautiful vodka is also the world's first vodka rosé. Getting its beautiful pink hue naturally from a blend of twelve delicately balanced flavors, Pinky is a singular experience with numerous layers of complexity. Pinky is the most beautiful vodka you will every try.

Each batch is hand-blended by champion wine tasters using natural and luxurious ingredients, including rose petals, violets and wild strawberries. It was created to enhance the taste, look and nose of any vodka-based drink.

This vodka is packed with esters - the delicate top note flavors that give fresh fruit its vibrant taste. Mix Pinky with cranberry and you'll experience how it puts the life back into processed fruit juices. Combine Pinky with soda, tonic, or just a few ice cubes to transform the standard vodka fare into a smooth, balanced taste with a floral finish.

It is to vodka what pink Champagne is to Champagne. Pinky has set out to create a category, Vodka Rosé, within the superpremium vodka market. It is not to be mistaken as just another flavored vodka. As with pink Champagne, Pinky sets a new standard for vodka.
Jim Barry "Lodge Hill" Shiraz 2005
Say-Vino price $15.97
jim barry lodge hill shiraz
Jim Barry bought the Lodge Hill vineyard in 1977 and devoted all but a small parcel to Reisling. That remaining small area of Shiraz produces an outstanding wine year after year. Jim Barry Lodge Hill Shiraz is 100% Shiraz, deep red in color with purple hues. It is medium full in body with moderate acidity and soft ripe tannins. This bold red offers rich aromas and flavors of dark cherry, plum, pepper, leather, vanilla, spices, and mint. Aged in French and American oak (29% new oak), it is nicely balanced to enjoy now and over the next 7-9 years.

Once Every 17 Years

cicadaDon't feel like cooking up something fancy just to enjoy the delicious but rare cicada? Try this simple yet exotic pasta recipe:
  • 2 cups blanched cicadas
  • Butter to sauté
  • 2 cloves crushed garlic
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh basil, or to taste
  • 1 Lb of your favorite pasta

1. Melt butter in sauté pan over medium heat. 2. Add garlic and sauté for 30 seconds 3. Add basil and cicadas and continue cooking, turning down the heat if necessary, for 5 minutes or until the cicadas begin to look crispy and the basil is wilted. 4. Toss with pasta and olive oil. Sprinkle with Parmesan if desired. Yield: 4 servings. Recipe by Janet Stein Carter

Barbecue Season is Here!

It's barbecue season and is there anything better on the grill than ribs? No forks, no linen, just meat on a stick, sauce on your face. But just what kind or ribs? Baby backs? Spare ribs? Country ribs? St. Louis cuts? Riblets? And just what the heck are McRibs, anyway?

Craig "Meathead" Goldwyn is writing a book named "Amazing Ribs" and his website, AmazingRibs.com, is a trove of info for anyone who loves cooking outdoors. On the page "The different cuts of ribs"  he clears up all the confusion over the different cuts. If you really want to vastly improve your ribs, his buying guide to smokers is unparalleled, but if you don't want to go to the expense, he will show you how to make competition quality ribs on a standard backyard gas grill  or charcoal grill.

There's lots of good tips and techniques as well as recipes for sauces and even Chinese Char-Siu ribs (it is the Year of the Pig after all).

My recommendations that go along great with Barbecue Ribs are Jim Barry Shiraz and Seven Deadly Zins.
Old Vine Zinfandel Barbeque Sauce

windmill zinfandelIn honor of barbequing season officially arriving (and in honor of Don's favorite wine!), below is our favorite recipe: Old Vine Zinfandel Barbeque Sauce. We like to use Windmill Old Vine Zin as it has a lot of juicy fruit which works well in this recipe.

And if you don't feel like making your own, our favorite barbeque place these days is Merle's inChateau montelena Zinfandel 2004 downtown Evanston (sorry, Hecky!) - they offer a huge array of side dishes as well as numerous main course options and, best of all, takeout is only a few minutes away which means we can head home and pop open a bottle of Zin from our cellar. Current favorite is actually the Chateau Montelena mentioned last week - it's got wonderful flavors of spicy dark cherry and pepper and even given its 14.6% alcohol level, it doesn't feel 'hot'. Enjoy! Ben and Barbara Rooks

Old Vine Zinfandel Barbeque Sauce

  • 1 bottle of Zinfandel
  • ½ cup + 3 heaping T of seedless blackberry or raspberry jam
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 3 T balsamic vinegar
  • 2 T tomato paste
  • 1 t each paprika & hot sauce
  • pinch of ground cloves
  • <1 t kosher salt
  • ¼ t freshly ground pepper
  • 1 T honey (or more to taste)

Heat the wine to a boil in a heavy, non-reactive saucepan over med-high heat, reduce heat to a simmer and cook until reduced to about half, ~25 minutes. Add jam, stirring until combined, cook about 5 minutes. Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, hot sauce and spices; cook, stirring occasionally, 15 minutes. Season with salt & pepper; add honey if desired. Set aside to cool; store in a glass container.
