Champagne Brunch
On
Saturday, May 19, there will be a second
chance to experience Laurent-Perrier's lovely Champagne, with
a delicious brunch at Convito Café and Market (847-251-3654),
located in Plaza del Lago. Convito Café and Market has
provided Chicago's
North Shore with 20 years of excellence in two
different formats: as Convito Italiano, a celebrated Italian
food & wine market that recently combined with Betise Bistro,
its sister restaurant. Together, the revised Café offers
dishes which best reflect the homey flavors of the French and
Italian countryside. $45 per person, all
inclusive. |
Third Thursday Wine Class- American Idols
 Our
classroom competition doesn't have anything to do with
Melinda, Jordin or Blake. For wine-drinkers, these
American idols are the big brands we pick
by name without a second thought. At this class we'll
sample four varieties represented by some of the biggest
brand names in America, true wine idols. These will be
paired with four contenders eager to knock the big names
off their perch. You'll be the judges, just like Randy,
Paula and Simon. Schaefer's all-time champion, Don Wils,
will be teaching this class. Class starts at 6:30,
May 17th. $20 for CAP
members ( $25 for non-CAP). Call us at
(847) 677-9463 to reserve your seat!
In honor of our theme of American Idols, a special
$5 discount is offered to those who call
today and mention the name of the noted American
winemaking icon who recently passed away. The class will
be FREE to those who call and mention the
name of his non-winemaking brother, who also passed away
earlier this year.

It's Limoncello Time
If you heeded my advice back in February and started your
batch of Limoncello, the recipe is done
and ready to enjoy. I've heard from a couple of people,
who are very pleased with the results and plan to keep a
supply in their freezer all summer. I thought I'd re-run
the directions for making this great Italian classic, so
you can have a batch ready for the dog days of Summer.
Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur that is served well
chilled in the summer months. It's just delicious, and
tastes like lemon drops. The ingredients are simple and
few, and making a batch doesn't require much work.
- Start with 15 lemons (choose
thick-skinned lemons because they are easier to zest) and
wash the lemons with a vegetable brush and hot water to
remove any residue of pesticides or wax, and pat dry.
- Get a one-gallon glass jar and pour in a
bottle of 100 proof vodka. Carefully zest the
lemons with a zester or vegetable peeler so there is no
white pith on the peel (the pith would turn things
bitter). Drop the zest into the jar as you go until you
are finished with all the lemons.
- Close the jar and store at room temperature in a cool
dark place for 40 days.
- When 40 days are up, combine 4 cups of sugar
with 5 cups of water in a large saucepan, cook
until thickened, about 5 to 7 minutes. Let the syrup cool
before adding it to the Limoncello mixture.
- Then add another bottle of 100 proof vodka.
- Wait another 40 days (if possible).
After this rest period, discard the zest and bottle the
limoncello.
- Keep in the freezer until ready to use. Tante
bella cosa!

Broman Cellars Special Re-Release
Bob Broman's passion is winemaking, small lots of
handcrafted wines made exclusively with Napa Valley
grapes. Since their inaugural vintage of Cabernet
Sauvignon in 1994 (consisting of 150 cases), Bob Broman
has delivered pure elegance in a bottle. His philosophy
has always been to cellar his wines and release them later
than most of his neighbors.
We have received a special offer from Bob Broman on a
release of a limited amount of his 1999 Cabernet
Sauvignon. The 1999 Broman
Napa Valley Cabernet was sourced from
vineyards located high atop Howell Mountain, as well as
from a few small vineyards on the Valley floor. The blend
for this wine consists of 78 percent Cabernet Sauvignon,
15 percent Merlot, and 7 percent Cabernet Franc. The wine
was aged in French oak for 24 months. Alcohol: 14.1 %
Total Cases Produced: 524.
Bob Broman describes his wine this way: "1999 was a
fabulous growing year, resulting in full, well balanced
wines. The Broman Cabernet Sauvignon is certainly no
exception. The aroma of this wine is full of ripe, dark
berry with a hint of toasty oak and mocha. There are mouth
filling ripe blackberries, cassis, black cherry and wild
berry flavors accented by a hint of leather and cedar. The
tannins are well integrated, and the long, lingering
finish leaves you wanting more."
It's not easy to find
Napa Cabs from the 90's in shops these days, and so
we are excited to offer this rare opportunity and nicely
aged wine to our customers. The Bob Broman Napa
Cabernet Sauvignon 1999 is specially priced at
$49.97 a bottle. Please contact us to place your
pre-arrival order and we will have your wine set aside
once it arrives in approximately three weeks.

Wine Find of the Week
On the scenic drive between the historic towns of McLaren
Vale and Kangarilla is a small vineyard and winery that
has taken the name Kangarilla Road. Higher than many
vineyards in the district, the fruit ripens slowly to
produce wine with elegance and finesse. Thus is the case
with Kangarilla Road Shiraz 2004,
sale-priced at $19.97.
Robert Parker describes it well in his
92-point review: "The stunning 2004 Shiraz
boasts deep mocha, blackberry, cherry, and white chocolate
notes interspersed with hints of new oak (both French and
American wood are used), pepper, smoke, and coffee. This
rich, layered, tasty Aussie can be drunk now and over the
next 7-8 years." This great bottle of wine is
currently on our shelf and included in our current wine
sale. Look for the label with the hand drawing of a Shiraz
leaf. You'll be impressed.
