Everyone knows that Moms love Champagne. Well, at
Schaefer's, we've got you all covered. We have the
Laurent Perrier Brut "L.P." non-vintage on sale for

perfect before, during, or after any meal. Forget the roses,
Mom will never forget the taste of the best Laurent Perrier
has to offer! This bottling is the " Cuvee Grand
Siecle" non-vintage Brut. Stephen Tanzer rated this
94 points, his highest ranking of all the Champanges he
tasted. Our sale price is $89.97 per

Monster Red from Spain
 A
new vintage of Alto Moncayo Veraton has
arrived. It's the 2004 and Robert Parker
says "The wine is brilliant. Veraton represents a fabulous
imitation of a top-notch Chateauneuf du Pape. Full-bodied,
with gamy, meaty notes, hints of roasted herbs, plenty of
kirsch liqueur and blackberries, and loads of glycerin and
alcohol, it is a stunning red to drink over the next 4-5
years. 93 points" Our sale price on this
terrific red is $19.97 per bottle.

Kistler Chardonnay's
 We
have just received our minuscule allocation from Kistler
Vineyards. We all know how great the quality is from this
winery year after year. The old problem is "it's been
discovered". Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler told Robert
Parker that they believe the 2005 vintage produced some of
the finest Chardonnays they have made. Our great "allocater"
will have a tough time doling out these few bottles.
We have the Kistler "Carneros" Chardonnay 2005
priced at $59.97. Robert Parker rated this
wine a lofty 95-98 points saying "it
possesses honeysukle, tangerine, and orange blossom
characteristics along with great acidity, plenty of
minerality and fabulous texture, length, and richness.
Flirting with perfection its that compelling."
The Kistler "L'Noisetier" Chardonnay 2005
is priced at $64.97. It is a blend of
grapes from the Vine Hill Vineyard, Dutton Ranch, Durell
Vineyard and Kistler Vineyard. Tasting notes from the winery
are rich, complex aroma of ripe fruits, minerals and nut
oil-elegant on the palate, bright lemon flavors combine with
toasted almonds and pain grillé. Richly textured,
long, lingering finish. Delicious now.

Third Thursday Wine Class May 17
 We
still have seats available for our Third Thursday
Wine Class. We could call it the "Contenders",
but someone else is using that name. Maybe call it the
"Pretenders"? We will be tasting four different varieties,
matching a big name winery against a less well known one.
The class starts at 6:30 PM, May
17th and will end about 7:45. The cost is
$20 for CAP members and
$25 for non-members. I hope you can join us.

B & B Restaurant Review
 To
celebrate its 10th anniversary,
Meritage (2118 Damen St. Chicago) invited back
their founding chef and brought back some of their old
favorites at 1997 prices, so even though it was a weeknight,
off we went, and we're glad we did! Always one of our
favorites to share with out-of-town friends, Meritage offers
consistently good creative American cooking with an
outstanding American-only wine list. One of the desserts
that we still talk about, years later, was a deliciously
intriguing chocolate wasabi mousse.
 The
name Meritage (rhymes with heritage) comes from a wine term
coined in 1988 by a group of American vintners who wanted to
establish standards for a category of American blended wines
made with traditional Bordeaux grape varieties - for red,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc,
etc. and for white, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle and
Semillon. To pair with our tuna and scallop dishes on this
visit, we went with St. Supery's version of a white meritage,
called 'Virtu' and made of almost equal parts Sauvignon
Blanc and Semillon. It was lovely, if a little grapefruity
without food, with clean mineral notes and hints of citrus -
look for it at our special Saturday tasting
featuring wines from St. Supery on
Saturday, July 7th. If you can't wait that long,
let us know and we can special order some for you, or simply
try their regular Sauvignon Blanc, full of
red grapefruit, lime and honeysuckle flavors and available
for $18.95. Ben and Barbara Rooks

recently combined with Betise Bistro, its sister restaurant.
Together, the revised Café offers dishes which best reflect
the homey flavors of the French and Italian countryside.
$45 per person, all inclusive.
